Чёрная вдова. Такое прозвище сопровождало эту женщину, наводившую ужас на людей своей кровожадностью, хитростью и безнаказанностью. Но это стало известно уже после её гибели в пожаре, а до того никто и не подозревал, что женщина по имени Брунхильда Полсдоттер Стошетт станет сеять смерть вокруг себя. Многие, благодаря её репутации хитрой и расчётливой женщины, так и не смогли поверить, что она погибла в огне, считая этот пожар хитрым ходом, чтобы скрыться от правосудия.

Родилась Стошетт 11 ноября 1859 года в Норвегии. Семья не богатая, 8 детей, каждый из которых спешил скорее повзрослеть и покинуть отчий дом. Брунхильда не стала исключением, решив подчеркнуть свою зрелость беременностью в 17 лет. Ребёнку не суждено было появиться на свет по причине выкидыша. Инцидент произошёл на фоне ссоры с молодым человеком, который ударил её ногой в живот. Причиной их смерти стал острый колит, но и у отравления похожие симптомы. Дети были застрахованы, поэтому супруги получили за них страховое вознаграждение.

Выяснилось, что причиной смерти стало отравление стрихнином, но сразу после захоронения трупа семейный доктор Соренсов вдруг заявил, что его пациент страдал сердечной недостаточностью, а стрихнин — это лишь маленькая составляющая его лекарств, но не причина смерти. Возможно, доктор пошёл на сговор с вдовой, получившей после смерти мужа 8000 долларов страховки.

Возможно, что все действия Белль были спланированы заранее, а может быть, решения к ней приходили спонтанно. Вскоре она приобрела на деньги со страховки ферму в штате Индиана, но даже не начав определённой деятельности, часть имущества погибла в огне. Страховка, несомненно, была ей выплачена, но пожары на этом не закончились.

Она вернулась к своим излюбленным методам, устроив поджог. В сгоревшем доме нашли четыре обгоревших трупа, один из которых был обезглавлен. Рядом лежала оплавленная вставная челюсть Белль, что и послужило поводом считать её погибшей в огне. Отсутствие головы стало отягчающим обстоятельством для шантажиста Рэя, на которого и повесили это преступление.

Но арестант не верил в смерть вдовы в том огне, с её хитростью это было почти невозможно. Стараясь максимально содействовать полиции, он показал места расправы над жертвами и некоторые захоронения, о которых знал. Но не все трупы были под землёй. Многих жертв разрубали и скармливали свиньям, некоторых сжигали, а прахом удобряли угодья. Рэй всячески помогал Белль, испытывая к ней чувства.

Под домом нашли Дженни и Эндрю Хелгелейна, его брат первым начал там копать и наткнулся на тела. Возле загона для свиней нашли ещё 12 тел, а также множество частей тел. Сгоревшие трупы, среди которых оказались и дети Белль, были предварительно задушены, а их личные деньги исчезли бесследно. Принадлежность обезглавленного трупа вдове осталось доказанным лишь благодаря вставной челюсти, лежащей рядом. Белль Ганнесс исчезла бесследно и больше о ней ничего не было слышно. Да это и не входило в планы «чёрной вдовы», ведь убийца более 40 человек не собиралась отвечать за свою кровожадную сущность.
