Книга Александра Дюма «Королева Марго» — первая часть захватывающей трилогии, в которой основой событий стало противостояние двух церквей: протестантской (гугеноты) и католической. Причина этой войны, подробности и её результаты, как для Франции, так и для Европы в целом, описаны Дюма достаточно подробно, но целью его не было излагать историческую справку событий противостояния. Произведение должно было остаться художественным, а читатель получить свою долю переживаний за главных героев в этой драматической, просто раздирающей душу истории о любви, дружбе и чести.
Начало романа может показаться скучным для любителей арены активных действий. Внутридворцовая «возня», много новых имен, шушуканье и сплетни за спинами, мелкие интриги и козни, вот что мы видим в первой главе. Но постепенно становится ясно, что автор готовит нас к кульминации первой сцены. Давайте познакомимся с её главными героями.
Свадьба Маргариты Валуа, дочери короля Генриха II и сестры действующего короля Карла IX, с Генрихом Бурбоном, королём Наваррским, вызвала у всех, в том числе и у простого люда, некоторое непонимание. Жених — протестант, невеста — католичка. Политические цели двух королевств видны невооруженным глазом. Свадьба состоялась, хотя и в отношениях молодожёнов тоже была пропасть. Маргарита была влюблена в Герцога де Гиза, ярого противника протестантов, а Генрих Наваррский являлся главой этих самых протестантов. Он был поклонником мадам де Сов, фрейлины Екатерины Медичи, о чем догадывался чуть ли не весь королевский двор.
Генрих Наваррский, зная, что невеста не испытывает к нему никаких чувств, даже в первую брачную ночь не собирался оставаться в покоях Маргариты. Но зато герцог де Гиз был уже там, и визит законного жениха в спальню стал весьма неожиданным сюрпризом для своенравного любовника. Генрих далеко не глуп, он понимает, что только предельная осторожность может спасти его от вездесущих ушей и длинных языков. Да и Марго не желала жениху никакого зла, тем более, ей бы не помешала поддержка умного человека. Оставить в своих друзьях Генриха она считала сейчас самым необходимым и первым делом, что-то ей подсказывало о приближающейся беде, а женское сердце не обмануть.
Жених пришел в спальню к невесте, но только лишь для того, чтобы заручиться поддержкой Маргариты и пообещать взаимную помощь, если семейные интриги будут им угрожать. Марго согласилась, несмотря на то, что спрятавшийся за перегородкой де Гиз всё слышит. Когда Генрих ушел, герцог выбежал из своего укрытия и в гневе отказался от всех дальнейших отношений с ней.
Празднование свадьбы продолжилось и на следующий день. Протестантская знать веселится с католическим двором, король Карл IX восхищается адмиралом де Колиньи, одним из вождей гугенотов. Всё это происходит на глазах Екатерины Медичи, цель у которой только одна — возвеличить свою власть, внося раздор и смерть в эту добрую дружескую атмосферу.
А в это время в Париж въезжает торжественный кортеж, являющийся свитой Генриха Наваррского, во главе которой дворянин, гордый, статный, некий де Ла Моль. Гостиница «Путеводная звезда» была очень кстати для уставшего путника, в которой он встречает такого же достойного собеседника, как и он сам. Это граф Аннибал де Коконнас. Найдя общий язык, они легко подружились, но только цели визита в столицу у них были разными. Коконнас приехал сюда не для праздного времяпрепровождения. Он был нанят для убийства вождя гугенотов, адмирала де Колиньи. 22 августа он совершает выстрел, но только ранит жертву. Адмирал остался жив, а его верные люди потребовали от короля сделать всё, чтобы стрелок был найден.
Эти события положили начало волнениям в городе. Мелкие стычки между протестантами и католиками происходили то тут, то там. Де Гиз решил действовать решительно и жёстко. Он отправляет несколько человек завершить начатое два дня назад, то есть, убить Колиньи. В числе этих людей и Коконнас, новый друг де Ла Моля. Но теперь их столкновение неизбежно, они принадлежат к разным лагерям, дело чести и запах крови движет Коконнасом, который с мэтром гостиницы нападает на гугенота, но Ла Моль выскальзывает из их когтей. Он чудом проскальзывает в Лувр, буквально в логово зверя. Убийцы преследуют его по пятам, их цель только одна — кровавая расправа. Ла Моль находит спасение в спальне Марго, которая при виде крови и приближающейся расправы над беспомощным человеком, прячет его. Для неё жизнь человека была дороже, чем жестокие авантюры королевского двора.
Коконнас убегает прочь из Лувра, пообещав себе убить ненавистного гугенота несмотря ни на что. А израненный де Ла Моль находит временный покой в кабинете, смежном со спальней Марго, где она пытается лечить его так, как может лечить любящая мать своего родного сына. Она влюбляется в него, а когда тот приходит в себя, он видит перед собой ангела воплоти, спасшего ему жизнь и не сводящего с него глаз.
Тем временем граф Коконнас, пользуясь подходящим моментом, бежит к знакомому ростовщику, которому его семья когда-то задолжала немалую сумму. Разговор с гугенотом был короткий. Схватка с сыном ростовщика вызвала мольбы отца о милости, на что должник соглашается. Но беспощадно убивает и сына, и отца, а сам получает ранение, которое могло стоить жизни и ему. Это происходит под стенами герцогини Аннриеты Неверской, подруги Марго. Она наблюдала за поединком и восхищалась ловкостью Аннибала, а позже спасла его от приближающихся гугенотов в своём замке.
Варфоломеевская ночь принесла много смертей и разрушений обеим враждующим сторонам. Но Екатерина Медичи и её сын Карл IX приняли относительное затишье после ночного кровопролития, как победу над гугенотами, хотя каждый по-своему. У матери были планы, более корыстные и темные, которые она вынашивала в своей душе единолично.
Когда королевский двор решил лично посмотреть на тело Колиньи, они отправились на площадь всей царской свитой. Там Коконнас и Ла Моль вынуждены были снова встретиться и без дуэли не обошлось. Наконец, скрестив шпаги, они закончили свои разногласия, оба истекая кровью. Ла Моль, давно забыв о недавнем унижении, помогает своему сопернику помощь, что снова их сближает и они не расстаются больше до самой смерти, которая забрала их жизни в один день и час.
Когда Медичи понимает, что Ла Моль может нарушить её коварные планы, она пытается обвинить его в подготовке покушения на короля, а его сообщником выставляет Коконнаса. Даже после заточения в Бастилию друзья пытаются оправдаться, утверждая, что это ошибка. Но когда им становится ясно, кто за этим стоит, им ничего больше не остается, как принять мучения от пыток инквизиции и готовиться к казни. Их пытают настолько жестоко, что Ла Моль больше не может встать на ноги. Коконнасу повезло немного больше, так как он пожал палачу руку, что того растрогало и он не применял к осужденному полную силу. Зато у Ла Моля оказались раздробленными все кости, а сознание готово было покинуть его навсегда.
Их любимые женщины, Маргарита Валуа и Аннриета Неверская попытались вытащить их из заточения. Один из охранников, подкупленных Марго, даже согласился принять удар ножом себе в грудь, лишь бы исчезновение заключенных было похоже на побег. Но Ла Моль не может двигаться, а все попытки поднять его приводят к нестерпимым болям.
Женщинам ничего больше не остается, как скрыться из крепости в самую последнюю минуту, когда уже слышались шаги палачей. Коконнас мог бы бежать с ними, но его гордость не позволила ему сделать это. Он остался с другом и принял смерть вместе с ним. Последнее, что он сделал для него, это на руках поднял товарища по ступеням на эшафот, попросил палача сделать всё быстро и безболезненно, а потом обнял окровавленную голову Ла Моля и сам принял топор палача.
Екатерина Медичи завершила свой коварный план умертвить одного сына, чтобы посадить на трон другого, герцога Анжуйского, будущего Генриха III. Это ей удалось, но ценой смерти Карла IX.
Она даже не догадывается, какую ошибку совершила, упустив Марго и Генриха Наваррского, сбежавших из страны в тот момент, когда в город въезжал будущий новый король Франции.
