Это были реальные события, происходившие во Франции в 1764 — 1767 годах. Стали происходить частые нападения непонятного существа на людей, выжить после которых удавалось лишь немногим. Мало кто отваживался выйти за пределы своего хозяйства. Начался этот кошмар в небольшой провинции Жеводан, что на юге Франции. Эта местность и сейчас существует, только теперь она называется Лозер. В окружении холмов и лесов, посёлки часто подвергались нападениям волков, которых в округе водилось очень много. Но характер нападения неизвестного зверя был совсем другим. Волки делали вылазки ночью, воровали кур да овец. Человека они боялись. Зато появившийся монстр нападал почти что в открытую, в основном, на детей. Душераздирающее зрелище, когда находили тело, у которого съедена голова, а внутренности раскиданы вокруг. Выжившие после нападения припоминали, что это животное было намного больше волка, с желтоватым брюхом, с гладким хвостом, на конце которого была кисточка. Спина бурая, на ней просматривались полосы. Морда походила на собачью, но более удлиненная. Движения гибкие, похожие на затяжные прыжки. Но особенно поражал взгляд. Он напоминал человеческий.

Нападения начались внезапно. Первое нападение было совершено на пастушку, которая пасла стадо быков 1 июня 1764 года. Это было на лугах, вдали от поселения. Помощи ждать было бесполезно. Зверь уже приготовился к прыжку, но девушка спряталась за быков, которые смогли ее защитить, проявив ответную агрессию к монстру. Тому пришлось отступить. Но через несколько дней он все же приступил к своей кровавой расправе, день за днем убивая людей. Число погибших достигло 28 человек. 10 человек смогли убежать или вырваться будучи ранеными.

Хищник обладал небывалой дерзостью, появляясь в деревне даже днем, спокойно шествуя по любой из улиц. Когда люди собирались в толпу с вилами да топорами и пытались его прогнать, он нехотя отступал, но при этом скалил клыки и возмущался.

Жители перестали выходить из домов, охваченные паническим страхом. Тогда была предпринята попытка убить зверя на его территории. Вооруженный военный отряд из соседней провинции Лангедок под командованием капитана Жака Дюамеля был направлен в леса Жеводана. Солдаты прочесали огромную территорию, убили десятки волков, но монстра не нашли. Он ловко обходил все ловушки, а к разбросанному отравленному мясу не притрагивался. Простой зверь на такое не способен. После неудачной попытки уничтожить хищника стали ползти слухи, что это оборотень. Версия стала распространенной после ещё одного случая, когда несколькими днями позже зверь встретился одному охотнику. Мужчина выстрелил 2 раза, но это не причинило твари никакого вреда. Он только пристально посмотрел человеческими глазами в лицо стрелку и ушел в лес.

В 1765 году нападения не прекратились, местным властям пришлось докладывать о происходящем королю Франции Людовику XV. На поимку животного были отправлены отец и сын д’Энневаль, прославившие себя великими охотничьими достижениями. Они привезли с собой в Жеводан много охотничьих собак, безвылазно проводили обыски лесов несколько месяцев подряд, но так ничего не нашли. Позже, прибегнув к помощи местных жителей и солдат, в августе они организовали крупную облаву, но без результата. После облавы не прошло и одного дня, как зверь напал на девушку, которая сумела от него отбиться.

Король отозвал д’Энгевалей, как не справившихся с заданием, а вместо них направил на поимку монстра своего главного ловчего, Франсуа де Ботерне. Силами большого отряда солдат было уничтожено почти 1000 волков, но они не подходили под описание монстра. Однажды солдатам все же удалось загнать зверя, подходящего под описание. Прицельным выстрелом в голову его уложили на месте, а когда позвали Ботерне, кажущийся до этого мертвым хищник вскочил и попытался вцепиться в горло ловчего. Множественными выстрелами удалось прикончить зверя. Это был огромный волк, весивший более 60 кг с клыками до 4 см. В желудке нашли куски материи, оставшейся от последней жертвы. Из хищника сделали чучело и выставили в Париже на обозрение горожанам.

Но на этом нападения, как ни странно, не закончились! В декабре 1765 года снова появились жертвы. В основном, это были дети. Нападения повторялись не так часто, как раньше, но продолжались они до осени 1766 года. После этого установилось затишье, продлившееся до весны. В марте 1767 года хищник напал на мальчика и убил его. Но самым шокирующим было наличие следов человека рядом со следами зверя, как будто покидающих место преступления, шествуя рядом. После этого появилось предположение, что у монстра, возможно, есть хозяин.

Новая попытка поимки монстра была предпринята в июне 1767 года. Отряд, состоявший из 300 охотников, приехавших из разных уголков Франции, решили участвовать в этой исторической охоте. Одним из охотившихся был Жан Шестель, набожный человек, веривший только в одно — он ищет оборотня. Даже ружье он зарядил серебряными пулями. Странно, но именно ему и удалось пристрелить зверя, который тихо приближался, чтобы напасть на Жана. Еще более невероятным покажется то, что первоначальные подозрения в принадлежности животного какому-то человеку падали на отца Жана, Антуана Шастеля, местного лесничего, затворника и ненавистника людей. Раньше он долго жил в Алжире, где научился искусству дрессировки животных. Вполне возможно, что убитый волк был его питомцем.

Когда распороли брюхо хищника, то нашли остатки конечности ребенка. Сомнений больше не было, убит именно тот, кого искали.

Нападения закончились, а история о Жеводанском чудище осталась в истории страшных событий Франции. Погибло 119 человек, общее число нападений было 250. Огромные волки, которые могли быть одного, странного выводка, почувствовав однажды вкус человеческой плоти, не смогли отказаться от нее уже до самой своей смерти.
